There is pre-loaded backup software you can use on windows or mac. The drives as expected are supplied with everything they need to get them running, in this case, a drive and a USB 3 cable. Which worked out an extra tenner for an extra 2TB of space with a known hard drive manufacturer. But then I stumbled across these 4TB Seagates for about 77.99.

I tried to force a manual backup, but the programme just hung. I turned it off and the temperature plummeted to mid 20s. I found my CPU regularly hitting 70 degrees with nothing obvious happening. The software had now been updated several times and has seriously lost its appeal for me.

Initially the software did not install properly, but I was successful second time. It came with it's own software, but I was just after the drive, or so I thought. I was running short on backup space and decided to go for another external drive. It was painfully slow and prevented useful use of my PC until it had finished. Yes, you can go for quick format but full format identifies bad sectors and it literally completes formatting procedure. Because full formatting takes hours and it just painful and consumes time. So, as of now, its better to go for older model than new one. So, i have to format to NTFS and now, transfer speed is good. But this ''exFAT'' has biggest problem with transfer speed. Usually, most of the drive will be in NTFS which is quite user friendly. I liked the design but the problem is its in ''exFAT'' system format. A few days ago, when i saw this new model edition and i thought of giving it try. I really love seagate external hard drives.
